Chapter Four

Cat

The rest of my day passes in a blur of classes. I stick to the back and manage to ignore not only the other students, Nulls, and angry alphas, but the teachers too. In fact, I do everything in my power to just blend in. And for once since I got here, it actually works.

But no matter what I do, this night will end the same. In my death.

And that means I barely touch my dinner in the dining hall. I barely hear Liam’s words as he prattles on to me about how exciting all our classes were.

When I look up across the dining hall, I see Carter staring back at me. Our gazes hold for a long minute, and the night we spent together rushes back to me. I’d had sex with a werewolf shifter. I’d let that man do things to me that made everything inside of me feel hot and uncomfortable.

But still, I wasn’t sure about him.

He screamed of anger and danger. And, I had a feeling that the next time we were locked in that room together, he was just as likely to tear me to shreds as he was to tear my clothes to shreds.

But he’s not the one I’m worried about right now.

When he looks away, I’m overwhelmingly relieved. I have too much to think about to spend time worrying about him right now

Which is when Zach looks in my direction.

Every muscle in my body stiffens. His ice blue eyes hold a wealth of pain, but not his pain, the pain he wants to cause to me. It isn’t quite anger, or violence, like I see in Carter, it’s something more controlled, and something equally dangerous.

He smiles slowly at me, a chilling smile that speaks of a threat.

I want to back down. I really do. I want to give him a single reason not to make tonight worse than I already know it will be.

But instead, I smile back.

His expression freezes, and then twists into one of outrage.

I only smile wider.

I’m satisfied when he looks away first, even though I know it’s a temporary victory. Tonight he’s going to make me pay for things that have nothing to do with me, and for this very moment. And when he’s awakening pain inside of me once more, I’ll only have myself to blame for pushing him harder.

“Cat?”

My gaze jerks to Liam. “Yeah?”

“It’s going to be okay.”

I raise a brow. “I thought you were the one going on and on about how I was going to die in that room.”

He looks down at his food. “Well, I’ve decided to accept the fact that maybe you’ll live.”

I laugh, feeling the tension in my chest ease, if only by a little bit. “How kind of you!”

He takes a bite of his meatloaf, and shrugs, still not meeting my gaze. “I’ve seen stranger things.”

“Which I hope you’ll tell me about one day.”

“I will. Promise.”

“I’ll hold you to it,” I say, then force myself to eat.

Tonight is going to happen, whether I’m hungry or full, so I’m choosing to be full.
